The high number of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Africa is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors. It is important to note that people fleeing their countries and embarking on dangerous sea journeys are often driven by a combination of factors, including conflict, persecution, poverty and lack of opportunities in their home countries. Here are some key factors that contribute to the high number of refugees in the Mediterranean Sea in Africa:
Political Instability: Many African countries have experienced or are currently facing armed conflicts, political instability, and human rights abuses. These conditions force people to flee their homes in search of safety and protection.
Economic Factors: Economic challenges, including high levels of poverty, unemployment and limited economic opportunities, can push people to seek better lives elsewhere. Lack of access to basic services, such as healthcare and education, can also contribute to people’s decisions to migrate.
Environmental Factors: Some regions in Africa are prone to environmental challenges such as droughts, desertification, and food insecurity. These environmental factors can lead to displacement and migration as people search for more livable conditions.
Trafficking and Smuggling: Criminal networks involved in human trafficking and smuggling exploit vulnerable individuals, offering them the promise of a better life in Europe. Many migrants and refugees, particularly those lacking legal pathways, may resort to these dangerous routes facilitated by smugglers.
Regarding the responsibility for addressing the issue, it is a shared responsibility among the countries involved. The responsibility extends to the countries of origin, transit countries, and destination countries. Countries of origin, often African countries, bear the responsibility of addressing the root causes that compel people to leave. Transit countries, including those in North Africa, have a responsibility to ensure the safety and dignity of migrants passing through their territories. Destination countries in Europe share the responsibility of providing humanitarian assistance, offering protection to those in need and addressing the underlying factors contributing to migration.
Addressing the challenges of forced migration and irregular migration requires a comprehensive approach that focuses on conflict resolutions, promoting economic development, improving governance, and protecting human rights. International cooperation and collaboration are crucial in finding sustainable solutions to the complex issue of migration across the Mediterranean Sea.
